ALFAZ BEFORE ALFAZ: CARBONERA AND EL CAPTIVADOR
Until September 16: Two of Alfaz del Pi’s outlying rural districts are the subject of an exhibition at Escoles Velles culture centre. Historically the settlement dates back to the 15th century, prior to the occupation of the current urban area of Alfaz in the 18th century

OBERTURA. MÁS ALLÁ DE LOS MAPAS
Until May 29: Obertura. Más allá de los mapas’ (overture. Beyond maps) featuring works from of collection of Michael Jenkins and Javier Romero, at Alicante museum of contemporary art (MACA). This first exhibition of works from the collection features a total of 70 of the 291 pieces. MACA is situated at Plaza de Santa María 3. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00-20.00, Sundays and public holidays 10.00-14.00. It is closed on Mondays. Admission is free
‘GLADIATORS, HEROES OF THE COLISEUM’
Until October 16: ‘Gladiators, heroes of the Coliseum’ exhibition at Alicante museum of archaeology (MARQ), featuring 140 exhibits on loan from eight Italian museums.
MAEQ is situated at Plaza Dr Gómez Ulla and is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00-19.00, and Sundays and public holidays from 10.00-14.00. It is closed on Mondays. The museum summer hours commence on June 15. General admission is 3 euros
ALICANTE IN HARMONY. EMILIO VARELA AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES
Permanent exhibition: Featuring works by Emilio Varela, Lorenzo Aguirre, Rigoberto Soler, Vicente Albarranch and Gastón Castelló. To highlight Varela’s works the exhibition curators selected paintings containing the province’s ‘luminous landscapes, recognisable urban views of the city of Alicante, extraordinary self-portraits, interiors, still lifes and portraits’ marked by the artist’s ‘original and unmistakable style’. MUBAG is situated at Calle Gravina 13-15. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10.00-20.00, Sundays and public holidays 10.0014.00. Admission is free
THE 19TH CENTURY. THE COLLECTION IN THE LIGHT
Permanent: ‘The 19th century. The collection in the light’ exhibition at Alicante museum of fine art (MUBAG). Including eight works from the Prado museum in Madrid. Containing 75 paintings and sculptures of diverse themes which are being displayed in a renovated space within MUBAG, and pays homage to 30 artists linked to Alicante province. MUBAG is situated at Calle Gravina 13-15. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10.0020.00, Sundays and public holidays 10.00-14.00. It is closed on Mondays. Admission is free
