Sierra Espuña awareness contest

- By Barry Wright

MURCIA region has organised a photographic competition to raise awareness of caring for Sierra Espuña regional park.

In recent years the increase in the amount of rubbish being left in areas of the park where people meet or leisure activities take place, and the importance of raising the awareness of visitors have prompted the regional environment department, through the directorate-general for the natural environment to organise the ‘Stop Basura’ (stop rubbish) photography contest.

The initiative runs until June and aims to ‘sensitise society to the problem of rubbish, by using photography as a form of expression, a tool available to the majority of the population’.

The competition is open to all people over 14 years of age, and is looking for images that show how rubbish affects the ecosystem. The four photographs which best capture the contest’s objectives will receive different prizes, including a latest generation smartphone, and ‘different experiences’ available through the Territorio Sierra Espuña portal, such as a night’s board, food or evening meal, and a hamper of typical local products.

The winning images will be displayed at the Alhama del Parque Regional de Sierra Espuña viewpoint from September 2022 until May 2023 – a place through which a large number of visitors pass and one of those most affected by the problem.

“The intention is to heighten the awareness of people about the environment around us, trying to draw attention to what kind of human activities directly or indirectly affect this protected natural space and its values,” explained director general for the environment, Fulgencio Perona.

Unfortunately the only available link to the full competition rules is through https://murcianatural.carm .es/c/document_library/get _file?uuid=9af58825-7e6d-47 e4-9e38-6d19afdee1d1&grou pId=14
