Another visitor dies in surging mountain river

- By Dave Jones

ANOTHER person has lost their life in the Bolulla mountain river – the fourth victim to die there in the last four weeks.

The emergency services reported that a 25-year-old man was pulled out of the fast-flowing stream in the municipality of Callosa d’En Sarrià at around 19.10 on Monday.

They noted that he was unconscious and suffering from symptoms of drowning.

Members of the public at the beauty spot tried to revive him but to no avail.

A team of paramedics arrived and carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation along with other techniques to save his life but the young man did not respond, according to state news agency EFE.

The incident occurred in the ravine which carries the mountain river through walls of rock and over waterfalls to the Fuentes de Algar, one of the most popular nature areas for day-trippers in the interior of Alicante province.

EFE did not reveal how the young man had ended up in the river or how the accident which cost him his life had occurred.

He is the fourth victim to die in the fast-flowing river in the last month.

The first tragedy occurred on April 8 when two people were swept to their deaths by the torrent.

One of the victims was an experienced mountain guide who was showing a crew around the area for a publicity campaign – the other was a young woman who was with the group.

The fire service reported that the accident had occurred in the ‘zone of the ravine and waterfalls’.

Then on April 17 they reported a young man had fallen into the waterfall and perished.

His body was recovered several hours later following a search involving a helicopter and team on the ground.
