Town centre knife fight shocks morning shoppers
Rapid and decisive action taken by the emergency services
A BRAWL with knives between four Colombian and German participants in Calpe left none of them unscathed and led to them all being arrested, reported the Guardia Civil.
The fight broke out in broad daylight at about 09.00 on January 25 on a street in the centre of the town, and so several passers-by reported the incident to the emergency services.
Guardia Civil and local police patrols arrived to find four men who had all suffered cuts and incisions, and there were three knives and a butterfly knife nearby.
The seriousness of the incident merited an investigation before residents became alarmed, according to the Guardia Civil spokesman.
The alleged participants in the fight were identified as Colombian and German citizens aged between 24 and 37, all of whom had police records in connection with incidents related to robberies, drug dealing, causing injuries and making threats.
They also belonged to two different gangs dedicated to drug dealing in different parts of Alicante province, the spokesman claimed.
The officers learned that the fight had started over a debt for selling drugs that each gang was claiming from the other.
The suspects were arrested on the spot for an offence of brawling, and put before a court in Denia, along with the knives recovered
from the scene, which released them subject to precautionary measures.
The spokesman assured the arrests were possible thanks to the residents who reported the incident and the quick response of the Guardia Civil and local police officers involved.
Their decisive action prevented those involved from suffering any more serious injuries, as well as protecting any innocent bystanders from getting hurt, he explained.
