Orihuela goes medieval
A MEDIEVAL market returns to the streets of Orihuela this weekend.
The 23rd edition of the event runs from today (Friday) until Sunday, February 5, and is making a welcome comeback following its cancellation for the last three years, due to the pandemic.
It covers an area from Puerta de la Olma to La Plaza de Santiago and is open daily from 09.00-23.00, without a break.
A total of 300 craft and food stalls and more than 20 trade workshops, some of which are participative, are being installed for the weekend.
There are also five activity and entertainment zones for children – situated at Plaza de la Salud, Plaza del Carmen, Plaza del Salvador, Plaza Santa Lucía and at the Rincón Hernandiano.
Entertainment will be provided by 25 musical, theatre and stage companies and six historical re-enactment groups.
Plaza de Santiago will host falconry displays and Rincón Hernandiano will be the scene of horse and cavalry tournaments. There will also be mule and dromedary parades, and Plaza Ramón
Sijé will be scene of ‘large format’ shows.
Councillor for fiestas Manuel Ortuño revealed at the market presentation that a total of 11 of the city’s Moors and Christians’ associations will be participating.
“We hope to give fiestagoers, residents and visitors everything we know, so that they can take away a good memory of this edition,” he said.
Many of the town’s historic buildings will be hosting related activities and displays during the course of the weekend.
Special buses have been laid on to enable Orihuela Costa residents and visitors to visit the medieval market. The buses leave from and return to Playa Flamenca roundabout and Orihuela Casino. Today they will be departing from 15.30-22.00, and from 10.00-15.30 and 16.30-22.00 on Saturday and Sunday. To reserve a seat visit the Alameda del Mar civic centre up until 14.00 today (Friday).
