Fun in the sun

- Match report by Mick McCarthy, photos by David Winder

ON Sunday, February 29, the Cauldron massive travelled to a sun-filled stadium in Aspe to watch CD Montesinos play UD la Coca Aspense.

Around 30 or so brave souls travelled to Aspe prepared for a very cold day. All were surprised by the lovely sunshine that greeted them.

The game started at 11.00 sharp, with Montesinos getting on top quickly. A couple of flurries by both sides saw shots missing at either end. Whilst Monte where well on top, in the 10th minute Arturo had a great chance in the six yard area, but the ball got stuck in between his legs, seeing the chance go begging.

Most of Montesinos’ possession was down the left side. On 15 minutes Pamies had a great shot saved by a defender off the line. On 17 minutes their keeper, reacting quickly, got the ball out to his front players and Aspense broke away, resulting in their No 11 sliding the ball past the Monte keeper for 1-0.

The goal was the result of bad defending by Montesinos, and I'm sure this would have been saved if the big man, Sergio, was keeping goal.

The game was 25 minutes in and the encounter had gone stale. CD Montesinos then had a great run down the left and the resulting cross was sweetly dispatched into the Aspense goal - a great header by Monte No 15 Manu, who had kept up with the attack.

On 30 minutes, the referee issued what was considered to be a slightly harsh yellow card, to the Aspense No 22. Until that point, the referee was having a good game.

CD Montesinos kept pressing down the left side with a couple of shots coming to nothing.

The referee brought the game to half time, with only 45 seconds extra time being played.

With the sun still shining, the players came out for the second half.

On 48 minutes Aspense had a shot and the Montesinos keeper thought it was time for a fantastic action photo, so he made a great save of a ball that was going wide.

There then followed a bit of toing and froing by both teams, and the tackles started to get a little tasty, prompting a second yellow card being shown. This was again issued to the home side’s No 22, resulting in them being reduced to 10 men.

On the hour mark, Montesinos were awarded a free kick 22 yards out, just to the left of goal. It was subsequently dispatched harmlessly over the top of the bar by Girona. Montes kept up the pressure however, and were rewarded with a goalmouth scramble which Arturo poked into the back of the net for a 1-2 lead.

The away team then made a change with Oussama going off for Fernando.

Aspense had a few attacks, with Montesinos not using the one man extra to any advantage.

On 69 minutes Monte replaced Kevin with Sawyer.

A little later the home team tried a shot on the Monte goal from inside their own half, which was picked up easily by young keeper Ivan.

CD Montesinos then started picking up the pace and a great pass by Arturo found Poyatos for a simple tap in, and 1-3.

More changes by Monte saw Poyatos and Pamies being replaced by Isaac and Vicente.

In the 84th minute the referee gave Aspense a free kick 20 yards out, which was sent nicely over the top of the goal.

There was then more battling in the midfield by both sides, until the ball dropped to Isaac's feet in the 90th minute, and from 22 yards out he lobbed the keeper to make it 1-4 at full time. It was a beautifully taken goal and well applauded by both sets of fans.

Man of the match was Arturo with one goal and an assist.

CD Montesinos’ top-scorer and first choice keeper were obviously being rested for this Sunday’s ‘battle at the Cauldron’; when our biggest rivals Torrevieja CF pay us a visit.

Sunday’s match against Torrevieja CF kicks-off at 17.00 and is being sponsored by Alex Dunn.
