€6 million to renovate homes

Neighbourhood regeneration scheme gets green light

- By Shelley Liddell

ALTEA mayor Jaume Llinares has signed an agreement with the government which will see Altea receive €4.6 million to renovate 346 homes in the town centre and create a housing office, with the remainder of the cash coming from the regional government, the council and homeowners.

The government money is coming from the ministry of transport, mobility and urban agenda’s aid programme for neighbourhood regeneration.

The first task will be the opening of the housing renovation office which will serve as an information point for the citizens of Altea. It will help in the management of this regeneration scheme and will also be able to apply for similar subsidies for the rehabilitation of other properties, according to the mayor.

The project will be carried out at 24 buildings, inhabited by more than 1,000 people, and will include the redesign of two streets. The total budget of the project is €6,099,374, of which the ministry of transport will provide €4,653,124, the regional government will contribute €272,060, municipal coffers will provide €822,930 and the properties owners will pay €280,000 (4.5% of the costs).

Town planning councillor, Jose Orozco said the work will include removal of asbestos, replacement of windows and carpentry; the conservation of buildings affected by damage, leaks and structural problems; and the replacement of the cooling and heating systems with aerothermal energy, among other works ‘which will improve the buildings and the quality of life of their inhabitants’.
