Carnival time on the shores of the Mar Menor

CARNIVAL season comes to several towns in Murcia region over the coming weeks.

Los Alcázares’ carnival programme features something for children, adults, and pets too.

On Wednesday, February 22, the seniors’ carnival takes place at the Adolfo López centre, starting at 16.00, and features music, churros (a form of doughnut), and a photocall to capture the best fancy dress costumes.

On Friday, February 24, it will be fancy dress time for the youngsters, with the children’s carnival parade on Avenida de la Constituci­ón in Los Narejos starting at 17.00.

The event is aimed at the entire family and features music, popcorn, inflatable­s, candy floss and a photocall so that participan­ts can take home a ‘good memory’ of the day.

“We want the children to come in their favourite fancy dress and enjoy an evening of fun and enjoyment, which is totally assured,” said the councillor for fiestas, José Carlos Castejón.

The grand carnival parade takes place on Saturday, February 25, and leaves Carril de Las Palmeras at 18.00, before passing along Avenida de la Libertad and finishing at the town hall.

“We will enjoy a proper show with the different associatio­ns and dance groups, who will parade to the carnival rhythm; a fiesta that will continue in Plaza Manuel Floreal Menárguez with music, entertainm­ent and a prize-giving ceremony,” explained the councillor.

The canine carnival is on Sunday, February 26 at 10.30, in Plaza del Espejo.

“We encourage you to dress pets in carnival costumes and attend this fun event, at which there will be food, drink, music, and a canine fancy dress contest,” said the councillor for animal welfare, Antonio López Campoy.

San Pedro del Pinatar’s carnival programme gets underway tonight with a ‘welcome to the carnival gala’ starting at 21.30 in the municipal marquee, situated on Lo Pagán esplanade. The event features a presentati­on of the carnival associatio­ns, and performanc­es by the Kebanna ballet, Beniaján carnival group and more.

On Saturday, February 18 from 11.00-13.00, there are face painting, and carnival mask and hat-making workshops, whilst at 12.00 there is a musical presentati­on called Imagilandi­a. This is followed at 13.00 with the children’s carnival parade. Meanwhile, from 11.0014.00 and 17.00-19.00 there is fun for children, including popcorn and candy floss. And at 17.00 there is a canine carnival parade, with three prizes for the best fancy dress. All of the day’s events take place at Plaza de la Constituci­ón.

The grand fiesta parade, with local and visiting groups, takes place from 17.00 on Sunday, February 19, leaving from Lo Pagán esplanade and finishing at the municipal marquee.

Finally, the Santiago de la Ribera area of San Javier has a busy week ahead, starting tomorrow (Saturday) at 23.00 with the carnival queen election. Following this on Sunday at 12.00 it’s the turn of the fourth canine carnival at Barnuevo esplanade, and at 17.00 the children’s carnival queen election takes place.

On Tuesday, February 21, the children’s carnival takes place from 17.00. This is followed on Wednesday with the associatio­ns’ carnival at 17.00.

From 22.00 on Thursday, February 23, it is the turn of the carnival associatio­n (chirigota) contest, starting at 22.00. The drag queen contest is on Friday from 22.30, and on Saturday from 12.00 it is the turn of the carnival pub crawl. The main event of the week is on Sunday, February 26 from 16.00, and is the grand carnival parade, leaving from Mar Menor secondary school.

Unless specified all events take place at the carnival marquee.
