La Pedrera comes up trumps
THE REGIONAL department for agriculture, rural development, climate emergency and ecological transition is celebrating World Wetlands Day with what is described as an interpretive ‘bingo route’ of La Pedrera reservoir.
The reservoir forms part of the surroundings of the Sierra Escalona protected landscape (Paisaje Protegido), and is considered to be one of the biggest freshwater wetlands in Alicante province. It is a key infrastructure for the regulation and distribution of water from the Tajo-Segura river transfer.
Water from the channel is used to irrigate crops and supply tap water to local population centres.
In addition to this, it is of great importance for species of flora and fauna present in the area, above all birds.
Participants will learn about the importance of conservation in wetlands, but in a different, special and fun way, as ‘never before’.
The activity takes the form of a game of bingo, where participants will discover and learn how to identify some of the species of birds that inhabit this marvellous natural enclave.
“Knowing and understanding how nature works is essential to be able to respect and conserve it, and it is our task to spread these values to future generations,” said a department spokesperson.
The activity takes place from 09.30-13.30 tomorrow (Saturday) and leaves from Plaza Caudillo Torr in Torremendo.
It is recommended that participants wear comfortable clothing and walking boots, and bring water, a snack and mosquito repellent.
