CD Montesinos blow hot and cold to take three points

SATURDAY'S heavy rain showers had thankfully abated by the time CF Rafal welcomed Montesinos to their stadium for the 17.00 start.

The small crowd attending didn’t take any chances and took their seats in the covered stand just in case the rain returned. There was quite a strong wind however, and from the kick off Rafal gained a free-kick 20 yards out. The resulting free-kick penetrated the Monte wall, with Sergio deflecting it out for a corner which was dealt with swiftly by the away defence and swept up-field for a subsequent throw-in near the right side corner flag. Pamies whipped in a pinpoint cross to the unmarked Pato who hit the net from inside the 6 yard box.

Monte continued to press forward, with Arturo dancing past three defenders and cutting back to Girona who thumped the ball in from 12 yards.

Rafal had no answer to a rampant Montesinos side, with Fernando and Arturo gaining a corner after good play on the left. This resulted in Poyato heading just over the bar.

A minute later, a hand-ball gave Monte a penalty for Pato to dispatch confidently into the net.

Only 27 minutes gone and Monte were 3-0 up. With no threat at all from a poor Rafal side and the visitors in complete control, how many more would they get?

The second period began with Victor replacing Oussama in defence.

Gocu hit a free-kick from 30 yards but no danger, and another free-kick after Pato was pulled over was easily cleared.

On 62 minutes, Gocu and Pamies were replaced for number eight Fernando and 11 Paco.

Rafal had a rare break into the Monte half, gaining a freekick 25 yards out.

The kick was superbly struck into the top left corner giving Sergio no chance.

65 minutes gone and the score is 1-3.

This spurred Rafal on, and the control that Monte had on the game completely disappeared, with them unable to string passes together, gain possession, or build an attack.

The Monte faithful watching the match became more frustrated and more vocal as the game stuttered along, with the away team being a shadow of its former first half self. However, Rafal, for all their dominance, were not giving Sergio much trouble in the Monte goal.

Paco did have a shot in the 89th minute but this went wide of the right post.

The final whistle blew to the relief of the cold and frustrated supporters of both teams, especially the Monte crowd, who, after the dominance of the first half, felt that their side completely lost all shape for the last 30 minutes.

It was a decent performance by the referee, after recent games had been spoiled by card-waving officials.

A 1-3 away win keeps Monte up with the leaders, but their inability to concentrate for the full 90 minutes could cost them dear against better opponents in the remaining 12 fixtures.

On Sunday, February 19 at 17.00, CD Montesinos are at home to Algueña CF.

This game is sponsored by Bryan, Derek, and Graham otherwise known as the Tres Amigos.

Keep an eye open for Colin as he wanders around the ground with his scratch cards, priced €1 - giving people the chance to win €20.
