- By Irena Bodnarec and Shelley Liddell

TO commemorate International Women’s Day on Wednesday, town halls across Spain stood united to build a fairer, more egalitarian society and demonstrate their commitments to equality. La Nucía illuminated the façade of the town hall, sports centre and Muixara pavilion in purple. They also hung a banner with the slogan “8M all women, all rights’ from the town hall and in addition, the bus stop shelters all had International Women’s Day posters.

Numerous events, activities and workshops had been organised across many towns over the last two weeks to celebrate and honour women.

In Benidorm an art exhibition by Sandra Pimm was unveiled at the entrance to the town hall, which will remain in situ until next Friday.

A street exhibition by the Benidorm housewives association was called ‘today is my day’, and was visited by the mayor Toni Pérez and councillor for equality Angela Zaragozí.

Villajoyosa’s main event was a performance by the municipal

choir at the social centre auditorium at 19.00, attended by mayor Andreu Verdú and councillor for equlity, Asun Lloret.

This was followed by the opening of the photographic exhibition ‘Referents. Dones en professions masculinitzades’, in which eight anonymous women from Villajoyosa or who work in the municipality have participated to eradicate gender stereotypes.

In Altea, the town hall square became the focal point with more than 400 children from the Garganes primary school gathering to read their own manifesto, following those read by each political group on the council.

A special programme about the day was broadcast live on Radio Altea and many then headed to Alicante to take part in a gathering for the rights of women.
