‘Big change’ in rubbish collection

-

A DOOR-to-door rubbish collection service and brown bin for organic waste will be introduced in Denia from Monday, March 20.

This will represent ‘a big change for the whole population’, assured the councillor for the ecological transition, Maite Pérez Conejero this week.

The service will begin in the Baix la Mar and Les Roques neighbourhoods, and the Jesus Pobre district, including Monte Pego.

That same day, the approximately 400 underground containers which have been installed for organic waste will be put into service.

The brown containers can only be opened by residents with a card linked to their address, and the waste deposited in them will be turned into compost for fertiliser or to generate energy.

At first it will only be possible to put this waste in the underground brown containers, but ‘at a later date’ ones will be installed above ground, starting in the town centre, noted Sra Pérez.

For the first few months, the cards will only grant access to the organic containers, but soon they will also be usable at the ‘ecoparque’ recycling depot, she said.

Residents can register to receive their cards from the Urbaser office, at Avenida Marquesat 5, by presenting a receipt proving payment of their rubbish collection charge.

They will also be given a litter bin and 75 compostable bags to start separating their organic waste.

The ultimate aim of the cards will be to reward residents who recycle most with discounts on their rubbish collection bills.

The door-to-door system will collect different types of waste on different days of the week according to a calendar that will be given to participating residents.

Each home will receive four bins – for organic waste, containers, glass, and other waste – which can be collected from the Urbaser office.

Collection points were also set up to facilitate the process in the different neighbourhoods this week, which will continue in Baix la Mar today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday), and Jesús Pobre on March 14, 15 and 16.

In Baix la Mar and Roques all the above ground containers will be removed and the underground ones maintained, while in Jesús Pobre the underground ones will be closed but the above ground ones maintained outside the village centre.
