Fabulous five for CD Montesinos

- Match report by Steve Robinson.

ON Sunday, CD Montesinos welcomed the eye-catchingly kitted-out Elche Dream to the Cauldron and dispatched them relatively comfortably 5-0.

The visitors were a side that some pundits had misguidedly thought would be a tough nut to crack.

After a nervy start by both sides Monte nosed ahead on five minutes when ace marksman Pato took advantage of a howler by the Elche keeper to roll the ball home. So, at this early stage it might have looked very much like the Reds were going to bag a hat-full, but a combination of bad luck, desperate defending and profligacy in front of goal, meant that chances came and went without further damage being inflicted on the scoresheet in the first half.

Monte largely bossed the midfield, with their opposition largely out-muscled, and offering little threat, apart from the occasional set play. Indeed, the opponent’s first serious shot on goal came with 20 minutes on the clock, such was the Reds dominance. So, a scrappy first session ended with Monte on top… just about.

After a somewhat sleepy start to the second period by Monte, the second goal came six minutes in, from a marauding Arturo, who smashed the ball in as the Elche defence parted like the Red Sea in front of him.

Elche did try and ring the changes on the hour, with a slew of subs to try and liven up what had been a lethargic performance from them so far, and, despite the changes lifting their game somewhat, yet another defensive gaffe on 71 minutes saw Pato tee up a grateful Girona to poke in.

Effectively, that shattered any hopes of a dream Elche fight-back, and three minutes later when Pato's fierce shot was palmed away, the ball fell invitingly to Girona again, who passed into an unguarded net for 4-0, and his brace.

The previously stalwart Elche backline was now all at sea and bravely pushing forward for what would have only been a consolation goal - instead it saw them concede a fifth when, with only minutes to play, Pato finally got the reward for his lone efforts up front, with a neat touch and shot on the left of the Elche goal.

Let's be honest, the final score flattered Monte, but Elche were generally poor and I'd sum up their performance as nice approach play, shame about the finish. Monte, for their part, did what they needed to do, took their chances and defended well, against a team that isn't short of skilled players. Impressive at the back were Carrasco and Oussama, Kevin and Arturo in midfield were busy and workmanlike, up front, Pato proves, once again, that if you ‘feed the duck’, he will score.

What's the cliché? You can only beat what's in front of you! Vamos Monte!

The man of the match was Oussama, selected by the match sponsors Pena DGL.
