Consider yourself at home
LIONEL Bart’s award-winning musical Oliver! enjoyed a record-breaking long run. Jávea Players’ production is limited to six days, so book your tickets now to avoid disappointment.
The streets of Victorian England, as penned by Charles Dickens, come to life as Oliver (Oliver Lewis-Marconi), a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin (Tony Sim). When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr Brownlow (James Ward) takes him in. Fagin, however, employs the sinister Bill Sikes (Paul Devlin) and the sympathetic Nancy (Francesca Ashby) to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discoverSharon ing the true love of a family.
Dickens’ passion behind Oliver Twist, was animated in part by his own childhood experiences and in part by his outrage at the living conditions of the poor that he had witnessed as a journalist. He challenges the Victorian idea that paupers and criminals are already evil at birth, arguing instead that a corrupt environment is the source of vice. Born poor, what are Oliver’s chances of a change in fortune?

Addendum: Last week, I mentioned White who plays Mrs. Sowerby. Although she is a relative newcomer to the Players, Sharon has an impressive background in drama, dating back to a
university degree, having acted, directed, and taught children, in the UK and France, and the Players hope she will do more with them in the future.
