Books galore!

- By Irena Bodnarec

THE POWER to be discovered between the pages of a book is formidable – as JK Rowling once said: “If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book,” and that is certainly something that Costa Blanca expat and retired bookseller, Dennis Jackson will attest to.

The last English bookshop in Benidorm, which was located at the Mercaloix indoor market, has closed down, but Dennis has managed to build a secondhand bookshop at the MABS charity shop in Alfaz del Pi. Over 55 years of bookshop experience has gone into building a fully functioning book department, with a wide range of not only English books, but also Spanish, Dutch, German and French ones too. There are sections covering fiction, reference, dictionaries, health, nature, gardening, cooking, children's books, etc.– everything you'd expect to find in a bookshop, including a wide selection of CDs and DVDs.

Dennis has even donated the very first book that he ever ordered, 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' by DH Lawrence – quite a risqué novel back in the day. He has a wealth of knowledge and is only too happy to assist and have a chat. You will find him at the shop every Monday and Friday. The shop is open weekdays from 10.00-13.00. All proceeds go to MABS to help provide a wide range of services for those diagnosed with cancer.

The shop is not far from the No 10 bus stop at the bottom of Alfaz high street. You will also find branches in Jávea and Oliva – both also with a wide range of reading matter. For more information about MABS visit www.mabscan cerfoundation.com
