Getting closer to Denia's history

- By Barry Wright

DENIA castle is an ‘emblem’ of the town and is its ‘eternal guard’ – from the top you can see the town in all its splendour, and between the walls it is possible to read centuries of history engraved on each of the stones.

Two guided tours, aimed at bringing people closer to its long history will reveal what is hidden in each of the spaces inside the fortress.

The tour starts at the lower part of the castle grounds and as it moves up upwards visitors will be able to discover the history of its treasures.

The visit culminates in the archaeology museum, situated in the highest part of the castle grounds.

They take place today (Friday) and Sunday at 11.00. The meeting point is at foot of the Torre del Consell, opposite the ticket office.

Also taking place on Sunday, this time at 17.00, is a guided tour of the town’s toy museum. The tour will look at the museum’s wooden toys and will show visitors the evolution of the size and types of some toys, which are in sharp contrast to current ones.

Prior to that, tomorrow (Saturday) there is a guided tour of the municipal ethnography museum called ‘Entre Randas y Pasas’ (between lace and raisins). The 19th century was for Denia a moment of splendour that left its mark on the transformation of the urban physiognomy and the agricultural landscape. The monoculture of raisins became the axis of the local economy, generating as a result an advanced and modern town. The tour will explain the two kinds of money coming into the area: how the bourgeoisie lived and the agricultural production that led to

the social and economic rise of the town.

All visits will be in Spanish. Previous registration is essential and taking place at ja gulles@ayto-denia.es or by telephone on 96 642 02 60 from 10.00-13.00 Monday-Sunday.
