IT was a lot warmer on Tuesday, March 14, for the Terry Leary Trophy. However, it was also very windy, so we had strong gusts to cope with at the start, which always make for interesting golf !

There were a total of 29 players, including one guest Glenys Cuming, who will shortly become a member, so we will see her regularly from now on.

We had one two, by Mick Farmer. Sadly for Mick he would have had a nice little earner, but he does not enter this particular ‘extra’ competition, so didn’t take home the money. However, Mick did have the consolation of winning nearest the pins on both the fifth hole, with his second shot, and the more difficult 11th with his tee shot. So, he did walk away with half a dozen golf balls.

There was a change to the playing set up today. The Spanish federation has now declared that it will operate a new ‘gender free’ tee position policy. This left most members, me included, somewhat baffled. No longer do we have white, yellow, red and blue tee positions,

we had numbers, which if you happened to forget which number you were teeing off from was a little tricky. We are sure it will resolve itself in time, but perhaps it would have helped if Oliva Nova had given us a little more notice of the changes.

Anyway, rant over. Despite the windy conditions, we did have some very good scores. In fifth and sixth place, tied on 34 points were Paul Westerman and Donna Green. Tied in third and fourth were Geoff Dawe and Derek Lindley on 36 points. And first place was again decided on count back, with Rob Westlands overcoming Keith Price, both having tied on 38 points.

Today’s winners were:

1. Rob Westlands – 38 points

2. Keith Price – 38 points

3. Derek Lindley – 36 points

4. Geoff Dawe – 36 points

5. Donna Green – 34 points

6. Paul Westerman – 34 points There was one knockout match, between Annette Bowen and Sylvana Rey. Annette came out on top with a 7&4 win over Sylvana. So, Annette progresses to the next round.

Because of an admin glitch last week, Nigel Siddall was missing from the prize list, he came fourth. Nigel couldn’t play this week but his prize awaits him when he next plays.

Next week’s game will be a combined pairs, if numbers allow and if you would like to play, please email the handicap secretary at pegohandicapsec @gmail.com
