AN EXHIBITION entitled ‘Resplandor de Roma. Lucernas romanas en el sur de la Cartaginense’ (radiance of Rome. Roman lamps in the south of Hispania Carthaginensis) is taking place at two venues in Murcia region.

Initially it will be on display at the Enrique Escudero de Castro archaeological museum in Cartagena until April 23, followed by Murcia archaeology museum (MAM), from May to December.

The exhibition enables visitors to learn about the use, shape and decoration of these small, oil, wick-bearing, lamps and their accessories.

It contains a total of 226 lamps, which represent a varied selection of the principal pieces on display in archaeological museums throughout the region – Cartagena, Murcia, Caravaca de la Cruz, Cehegín, Bullas, Mula, Jumilla, Cieza, Lorca, Alhama,

Águilas and Mazarrón.

They are in a variety of shapes and designs, including fish, Latin crosses, and with flower and fruit adornments, as well as a bronze lamp in the form of a boar.

The majority of the exhibits have never been on public display before and are complemented with a series of explanatory resources such as model lamps, kilns, illustrations of scenes from Roman life, prints with drawings, and photographs of the most significant examples found in the Murcia region.

The Cartagena exhibition is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10.00-14.00 and 17.00-20.00, and from 11.00-14.00 at weekends. It is closed on Mondays and public holidays.

Admission is free.

The museum is situated at Calle Ramón y Cajal, 45, Cartagena.
