Community spirit helps save lives

HELEN and Lee Tarrant, owners of Pub Delfin in Calpe, have recently purchased a defibrillator which is now installed on the premises.

Trained nurse, Helen is passionate about having this piece of equipment and the couple decided to host fundraisers to raise the money for the purchase of the life-saving machine.

They have held raffles and small fundraisers over the last year at Easter, Halloween and Christmas, and last July a large fun day, with a tombola run by the community, took place. Sarah, a valuable member of the Delfin team suggested she would have her very, very long hair shaved off to raise even more money, and for every meal taken on the day Helen and Lee made a further donation. The day was such a success.

Having researched the best option for the defibrillator to be professionally installed, insured and training given to three staff, the equipment is now in place and the training has been completed.

"We are so very proud. However this hasn’t been easy, as the town hall said no to having the defibrillator outside on our own wall, obviously boxed and connected to 112," commented Helen.

"After a long challenge I decided to go with having it installed inside, as this had been raised by the community and I didnt feel it was right to hold onto the money for such a important resource for any longer."

The official announcement to help promote this resource to the community will be today, Friday, April 21 at 14.00, and will be attended by the mayoress Ana Sala, for the cutting of the ribbon.

"We want to thank the community for their commitment and support.

"We would love to have more fundraising days for more defibrillators, and need the support from the town hall and all around," added Helen.
