A good year for the Rosas

BENITACHEL­L’S fiesta de la Rosa, in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, got underway yesterday (Thursday), and continues until May 14.

The celebratio­ns start in earnest tomorrow (Saturday), with the councillor for fiestas stating they have put together an ‘intense programme’ of events and activities for the coming days.

Friday, May 5

19.30: Saints Mass

Saturday, May 6

11.00: ‘Laboratori­o de Cuentos’ (story laboratory) for children, in the municipal library

11.30-13.30: Children’s games and carousel, at the Mercat parking

12.00: Bell ringing

18.30: Parade with the young male fiesta attendees (festeros) collecting young female attendees (festeras), accompanie­d by Santa María Magdalena municipal music group 19.15: Gathering in the Oratorio of all participan­ts in the floral offering

19.30: Saints Mass

19.45: Floral offering to the Virgen de la Rosa, accompanie­d by La Llebetjà music band While the offering is taking place there will be a traditiona­l dance display the by Morro Falquí dance group, in Plaza de la Iglesia

24.00: Fiesta dance in Calle La Pau, with La Fiesta orchestra

Sunday, May 7

Fiesta de la Rosa

08.00: Fiesta wake-up call, organised by the festeros and festeras

10.30: Parade with the festeros collecting the festeras, accompanie­d by Santa María Magdalena municipal music group 11.00: ‘Pans Benets’ (blessed bread) is taken from the Oratorio to the church

11.30: Saints Mass in honour of the Virgen de la Rosa, sung by the parish choir Followed by the ‘blessed bread’ being distribute­d through the streets of the town, accompanie­d by Santa María Magdalena municipal music group 20.00: Solemn procession in honour of the Virgen de la Rosa, San Pancracio Mártir (Saint Pancras) and San Luis Followed by fireworks in El Portalet

24.00: Music at the fiesta associatio­n grounds

Monday, May 8

08.00: Fiesta wake-up call, organised by the festeros and festeras

10.30: Parade with the festeras collecting the festeros, accompanie­d by a charanga (fiesta wind and percussion band) 11.00: Children’s park at Calle La Pau

11.30: Mass in honour of San Pancracio Mártir

13.00: Rooster races in Calle La Pau 14.00: Giant paella in Calles Mayor and La Pau. Served to tables in both streets 16.30: Performanc­e by Toni Catalá in Calle La Pau

Saturday, May 13

08.00: Fiesta wake-up call, organised by the festeros and festeras 10.30: Informal parade accompanie­d by Charanga Toca’t un ou 12.30: Childrens’s greasy pole in Calle La Pau

14.00: Paella making contest in Calles Mayor & La Pau, prizes of €100, €75 & €50 to be won 17.00: Fancy dress parade passes through the streets of the town

18.00: Disco with Karakatoa in Calle La Pau
