GUARDIA Civil are hunting for a driver who abandoned his car after an astonishing crash last week.

The incident took place on the N-332 between Benissa and Teulada, near the La Pedrera industrial estate.

A passing resident noticed a car lying at quite some distance from the road, and fearing for the safety of the occupants, called the police.

Guardia Civil arrived at the scene at around 10.30, and quickly realised that the driver and any occupants had vanished.

Upon investigation, it transpired that the car had crossed the road at high speed and flown around seven metres in the air, landing upright in dense shrubbery. It had travelled so far that it could not be seen from the road.

As there were no brake marks on the road, the Guardia Civil could only assume that the driver of the car had been intoxicated and had fled the scene.

The car was subsequently found to have been stolen, and the search for the driver continues.
