AFTER the excitement of the Volta a la Comunidad Valencia cycle race departing from the village last Friday, Benitachell followed the event up with a weekend full of activities and celebrations.

To the amusement of many, one of the celebrations on Saturday was called the “Gran Cagà”. For those not in the know, gran cagá translates to - how do we say this politely - a big number two.

It was in fact a community event, with inflatables and games for children, followed by a group meal.

It was held among many other events during the weekend, which included the blessing of the animals and the festival of San Blas, where traditional chocolate dips with fartons (similar to iced buns) were distributed to visitors.

On Sunday, lunch was of- fered to all attendees, before most of the population appeared with their pets to join in a parade and then have them blessed. Dogs, cats, turtles, rabbits and many other kinds of animals received the blessing, and their owners received a scroll to mark the occasion.

The party ended at the market square, where the blessing of the pets took place.
