Fiesta death shocks Dénia
The sudden death of a young fiesta club member blighted the 'half-year' Moors and Christians celebrations in Dénia, which ended at the weekend. Tomàs Chiner Babaloni, a member of the Deniers Christians filà and the Falla Centro commission, was just 40 years old when he collapsed and died instantly with a heart attack. He and his friends, among hundreds of other local residents, were celebrating the Mig Any or 'half-year' Moors and Christians, a low-key event to break up the year before the spectacular summer parades. All the filaes, or troops, had joined in a series of celebrations for the first day of the mini-fiesta, which usually culminates with a meal for all festival group members. Tomàs was the eldest son of a very well-known Dénia family, and his death has rocked the local community.
