Mu­sic in the Cas­tle Fes­ti­val re­turns to Dé­nia

STORM­ING the cas­tle next week­end with a fu­sion of Mediter­ranean folk and con­tem­po­rary tunes, Dé­nia's favourite sum­mer mu­sic fes­ti­val is back in town.

A ro­man­tic, myth­i­cal and beau­ti­ful venue for a se­ries of late-night open-air con­certs, it's no won­der the Música al Castell sea­son in the grounds of this Me­di­ae­val gem sell out like ice-creams in a heatwave.

All shows start at 23.00 and tick­ets can be bought from the tourist in­for­ma­tion of­fices or on the door. Get one con­cert free if you buy a pass for the whole lot at €35.

Thurs­day, July 19

De­scribed as 'the new voice of the Mediter­ranean', trio Nes brings a haunt­ing and ex­otic brand of acous­tic soul mu­sic, fused with Ara­bic touches, to the Ma­rina Alta cap­i­tal's moun­tain­top fortress. You'll be blown away by the mag­i­cal voice of French-Al­ge­rian opera and jazz singer and cel­list Nes­rine Belmokh, and her string and per­cus­sion boys Matthieu Saglio and David Gadea. Pure gold. Tick­ets cost €10 a head.

Fri­day, July 20

Fla­menco leg­end Car­men Linares re­vives the time­less tal- ent of Elche-born wartime poet Miguel Hernán­dez, one of Spain's 20th-cen­tury lit­er­ary icons, by putting his works to mu­sic and singing them over the rooftops in her must-see show Verso a Verso. Tick­ets cost €15 a head.

Satur­day, July 21

Big, bold and full of brass in every sense, the Boban Markovik Orkestar is def­i­nitely one for the cal­en­dar if you're a film buff as well as a mu­sic-lover.

Sax, cor­net, trum­pet, trom­bone and a baker's dozen of bril­liant Balkan artists, this tal­ented crowd com­posed and played the sound­tracks for sev­eral of the sil­ver-screen pro­duc­tions by di­rec­tor Emir Kus­turica, a hot name in cin­ema in the band's na­tive Ser­bia. Tick­ets cost €15 a head.
