THROUGHOUT The month, local police in Benidorm have made a concerted effort to crack down on the ‘pea men’ plaguing the resort and reported that they ‘intervened’ on 33 occasions, confiscating €1,210 from 17 of the scammers.

Of these 22 were charged with ‘Acts of Disobedience’ resulting in criminal records and their cases have been transferred to the court for sentencing. Councilor for security, Lorenzo Martinez was evidently proud of this accomplishment, explaining that they are cracking down on the pea men in much the same way as they have been on the illegal cocktail sellers on the beaches, of which some were taken to court.

However, the punishment handed down by the court – a fine of €4 per day over four months, which equates to the grand sum of €480 is laughable and hardly a deterrent, evi dent as they are still visible almost everyday on Levante beach.

Sr. Martinez said surveillance will continue throughout September and October in a bid to reduce their presence.

Have you noticed a marked reduction of these gangs on the streets of Benidorm – let us know your thoughts.
