Black widow plot thickens

SPANISH media have been captivated with the story of the wheelchairbound newlywed detained for allegedly stabbing her husband to death with a screwdriver in Alicante with the help of her carer.

Identified only as Concepción, but known as Conchi, reports of her colourful past have speculated on the suspects’ possible motives and dubbed her a ‘black widow’.

One such theory is that 45yearold Conchi, originally from Onil, had entered into a marriage of convenience with the 69yearold victim in Guardamar del Segura so that she could continue to fake being a tetraplegic.

Sources with knowledge of the case told state news agency EFE that the National Police believe this is why she conspired with her supposed carer, who is aged 58 and also from Onil.

Nevertheless, she had to be carried by officers into the courthouse, where the investigating judge denied bail and ordered both of them to be held in custody on remand.

Neither suspect made a statement to police or to the judge but witnesses and people close to the victim, who is originally from Santander, have claimed she was a fraud.

She was supposedly rendered tetraplegic by an accident and told her husband’s friends she was waiting to receive €200,000 in compensation and a disability pension.

But several witnesses, including the offduty policewoman who tried to stop the attack in an openair car park in the city’s Albufereta area, claim Conchi was holding the victim down while her carer stabbed him in the head, neck and chest.

Others say they saw her at her wedding get out of her wheelchair and into the car without any help.

A friend of the deceased claimed he had told him he already knew the carer was in a relationship with his bride, and the carer had a terminal illness which could kill him within a few months.

For this reason, and to prevent her having to move into a care home when her carer died, he had proposed they get married so she could say she had someone to look after her.

Police believe the couple did not live together after the wedding, which took place just a short time after they met, and suspect that the victim may have done so for money.

At the time of their arrests, both suspects were wearing dark clothes, hats and gardening gloves over rubber ones, and had a blanket on the ground which may have been to wrap the body in.

It has also emerged that Conchi had three previous husbands, the third of which was actually murdered, a crime for which his own brother was convicted.

The daughter of her second husband gave an interview claiming that her stepmother mistreated her when she lived with her from the age of four to six.
