Steal­ing homes from dead own­ers

Prop­er­ties worth more than €3 mil­lion were mis­ap­pro­pri­ated

A GANG which dis­en­fran­chised heirs by con­niv­ing to mis­ap­pro­pri­ate prop­er­ties from de­ceased own­ers has been busted by the Guardia Civil.

Ac­cord­ing to a force spokesman, four sus­pects were in­volved in the racket.

He ex­plained that they took ad­van­tage when there was a de­lay in prop­er­ties be­ing taken over by the heirs.

They forged doc­u­ments to pre­tend they owned homes and land to sell them to un­sus­pect­ing buy­ers.

Some of the prop­er­ties were even turned into squats.

The spokesman noted that prop­er­ties worth more than €3 mil­lion were mis­ap­pro­pri­ated in Al­i­cante prov­ince, Mur­cia and Almería.

The in­ves­ti­ga­tion was launched in Fe­bru­ary fol­low­ing an of­fi­cial com­plaint from two heirs in Al­hama de Mur­cia.

They re­ported that the farm they had just in­her­ited was be­ing of­fered for sale by un­known peo­ple us­ing fake doc­u­ments and con­tracts.

Of­fi­cers found that sim­i­lar cases had been re­ported in Mazarrón and an­other in Al­hama de Mur­cia.

The crim­i­nals apart­ments, hol­i­day farms and rus­tic plots.

The spokesman re­ported that the chief sus­pect is a 32year-old Spaniard who has been con­victed for sim­i­lar crimes. tar­geted homes,

Some mem­bers of his team fo­cused on search­ing for de­ceased peo­ple whose prop­er­ties had not been handed over to the heirs, or who had no heirs.

An­other mem­ber spe­cialised in forg­ing all the rel­e­vant doc­u­ments in­clud­ing ti­tle deeds, prop­erty registry doc­u­ments, elec­tric­ity and wa­ter bills, and sales con­tracts.

They used the fake doc­u­ments to reg­is­ter prop­er­ties and land in their names.

Gang mem­bers even moved into some of the prop­er­ties, con­tracted the wa­ter and elec­tric­ity sup­ply and signed on the mu­nic­i­pal reg­is­ter (padrón).

Four sus­pects have been charged with fraud, forgery, usurp­ing iden­ti­ties, or­gan­ised crim­i­nal ac­tiv­i­ties and theft.
