Marina Alta on the EU heritage map
A COMPLETE heritage map of the Marina Alta has been commissioned by the European Union – and Dénia has been given the job of compiling it.
The EU-wide project involves six towns, hand-picked and given a budget of €150,000 to put together a full ordnance-surveytype guide to the history, culture and countryside in their areas.
Architectural sites due to feature on the map include Jávea's La Plana windmills, the raisindrying huts or riu-raus in Jávea and Jesús Pobre, and archaeological digs.
Dry-stone wall platforms, or steps in the mountainside for farming are among the rural treasures that will figure on the map, and intangible heritage includes folk songs, fiestas and recipes.
Parma (Italy), Linköping (Sweden), Tours (France), Kassel (Germany) and Konavle (Croatia) join Dénia, along with the SERN association which promotes cultural ties between Italy's Emilia Romagna district and several regions and towns in Sweden, including Stockholm.
