-

A TOTAL of 44 people have died of coronavirus in retirement homes in the Valencia region – and 26 of the fatalities were in one centre in Alcoy.

The regional health department is investigating why so many residents have died in just one place.

Councillor for health Ana Barceló noted that they have detected Covid-19 in 46 retirement homes around the region, and a total of 221 residents have tested positive (123 in Valencia province, 84 in Alicante and 14 in Castellón).

A total of 67 members of staff have also caught the virus.

Sr Barceló said 83 inspectors are visiting retirement homes ‘to check that they are following the protocols set out by the national government’. Others have been taken over by the regional health department.

In the Valencia region hundreds of soldiers are helping to disinfect the homes. They are using nebulisers to spray hydrogen peroxide as part of the operation.
