THREE people died in an accident on the A-7 motorway at Crevillente early on Monday morning, according to state news agency EFE.

The emergency services reported that the crash occurred at around 05.45, by kilometre mark 528 in the northbound carriageway towards Alicante.

Two HGVs and a car collided, for reasons that have not been established.

One of the trucks burst into flames killing two of the drivers, while the driver of the car died from the impact.

Two ambulances were sent to the scene but the medics could only confirm that the victims were already dead.

Their bodies were taken to the legal medicine institute in Alicante for autopsies.

Diversions were put into place along the N-340 while cranes were brought in to clear the wreckage from the road, which had to be closed for around nine hours until one of the lanes could be opened at around 15.00.

Based on their initial investigations, the Guardia Civil indicated that it seemed one of the truck drivers may have lost control and ploughed through the central reservation, then collided with the other truck.

One of the lorries was carrying fruit and vegetables while the other was loaded with cardboard.

Man run over by truck

A 42-year-old man was injured on Tuesday morning when he was hit by a truck at La Granadina industrial estate in San Isidro, reported the emergency services.

The vehicle appears to have been manoeuvring at the time and two ambulances were sent to treat the victim for a chest injury and back pain.

They then took him to Vega Baja hospital in Orihuela.
