POLICE nationwide are still tackling gender violence and domestic abuse cases during the lockdown and special measures are being put in place for those forced to share confined space with their aggressors during the state of emergency

On Friday, they arrested a 43year-old Polish man in Denia for issuing death threats to his girlfriend.

National Police went out to the couple's house on the Camí Alt, close to the Jávea border, in the early hours after the victim, a Spanish woman aged 58, called for help.

The man previously had an injunction preventing him from approaching his partner, but this had expired.

Another has been brought into effect, since he was released following his arrest.

Victims of domestic or gender violence can call the 016 helpline 24 hours a day, where they can be attended to in any one of 51 languages.

They can also ring the freephone 900 580 888 number.

Neither shows up on an itemised bill, and extra staff have been brought in to cope with the rising number of calls resulting from the enforced quarantine.
