THE BENI­JÓ­FAR pa­tron saint, San Jaime fi­es­tas get un­der­way to­day (Fri­day, July 13) and con­tinue un­til Thurs­day, July 26. The town may not be the largest in the Vega Baja but the res­i­dents know how to en­joy them­selves when it comes to fi­esta time. The town hall wishes ev­ery­body ‘happy fi­es­tas’ Here is the pro­gramme of the main events:

Fri­day, July 13 20.30: Grand pro­ces­sion to col­lect the fi­esta queens with the Beni­jó­far mu­si­cal union so­ci­ety band and grand fi­esta as­so­ci­a­tion pa­rade with Fénix Batukada (samba-flavoured street pa­rade), leav­ing from the town hall 21.30: Of­fi­cial fi­esta re­cep­tion at the town hall 22.00: Elec­tion of fi­esta queens in­clud­ing a per­for­mance by the María José dance group at San Jaime school play­ground 24.00: Fi­esta open­ing night disco at San Jaime school play­ground. Dance un­til your body can take no more!

Satur­day, July 14 10.00: Big heads and pipe and drum band pa­rade through the streets 13.00: Fi­esta in­au­gu­ra­tion with guest speaker, fi­esta pa­rade, foam can­non, beer, con­fetti and gifts at the en­trance to the town hall 14.00: Start of the 16th mul­ti­cul­tural gas­tron­omy day. Tapas tast­ing of typ­i­cal dishes from Beni­jó­far and var­i­ous other coun­tries, as well as the pop­u­lar Beni­jó­far bar­be­cue of lo­cally pro­duced sausages, etc. Every­one is en­cour­aged to come along and par­tic­i­pate. The event will take place at the sports ground. Tapas cost €0.50 17.00: Colour fi­esta and disco – bring some mu­sic and colour into your life. At the sports cen­tre 20.00: Cagá del Burro: Calle Fran­cisco Rivera Pérez will be di­vided into num­bered plots (which can be pur­chased for €3), if the burro (don­key) ‘loses it load’ in your plot you win €200, if it has a ‘sprin­kle’ on your plot you win a ham. Plot tick­ets are avail­able from some lo­cal busi­nesses 23.30: Una Noche en Mex­ico (a night in Mex­ico) mu­si­cal show fol­lowed by macro disco in the school play­ground

Sunday, July 15 10.00: Ex­hi­bi­tion of clas­sic cars and bikes, chop­pers, and ve­hi­cles be­ing en­tered into the Wacky Races con­test, which will ar­rive through the ur­ban­i­sa­tions and town streets. The ex­hi­bi­tion will take place prin­ci­pally in Calle Co­razón de Jesús and Avenida Fed­erico Gar­cía Lorca. There also will be mu­sic, a bar and gifts 20.00: 8th Wacky Races. Con­tes­tants steer their home-built, en­gine­less cars down the town’s hills. As­sem­ble at Calle Pi­lar Miró. The course fol­lows Calle Pi­lar Miró, Calle Juan Ramón Jiménez, Calle Pablo Pi­casso and ends at the school play­ground 22.00: María José Bal­let fes­ti­val at the school play­ground

Mon­day, July 16 19.00: Beni­jó­far mu­sic band pa­rades through Mon­teazul and Ata­laya Park ur­ban­i­sa­tions 19.00: Youth foot­ball sala con­test 21.30: Sum­mer cin­ema at San Jaime school play­ground with the film Señor Dame Pa­cien­cia (Lord, give me pa­tience). Bring your evening meal and the fi­esta as­so­ci­a­tion will pro­vide drinks and pop­corn. At San Jaime school play­ground Tues­day, July 17 10.00: Chil­dren’s wa­ter fi­esta fea­tur­ing the lat­est in­flat­a­bles and wa­ter at­trac­tions at the mu­nic­i­pal sports cen­tre swim­ming pool 19.30: San Jaime fi­esta petanca con­test at Plaza de las Ver­be­nas. Free regis­tra­tion - call Charly on 618 382 444 20.00: Chil­dren’s fancy dress pa­rade, fan­tasy and imag­i­na­tion in the streets. Start­ing and end­ing at San Jaime school. At the end of the pa­rade there will be snack and en­ter­tain­ment with La Isla del Te­soro (trea­sure is­land)

Wed­nes­day, July 18 19.00: In­ter fi­esta as­so­ci­a­tions mixed foot­ball sala con­test at the sports cen­tre. Free regis­tra­tion 21.00: Third age fi­esta. Sup­per for the town’s pen­sion­ers with en­ter­tain­ment by the mu­si­cal group Mediter­rá­neo at San Jaime school play­ground

Thurs­day, July 19 21.00: Grand evening meal and prize bingo for the ben­e­fit of San­ti­ago Após­tol church at San Jaime school play­ground. Those at­tend­ing can bring their own food or pur­chase it at the event

Fri­day, July 20 13.00: Bell ring­ing and rock­ets 19.00: Chil­dren’s foot­ball sala con­test. Free regis­tra­tion 21.00: Fla­menco fi­esta at the Osiris fi­esta grounds, with the best An­dalu­cian at­mos­phere, mu­sic and snacks 23.30: Re­mem­ber Queen (Queen tribute), fol­lowed by macro disco un­til dawn Satur­day, July 21 09.00: Bell ring­ing and rock­ets 10.00: Big heads and pipe and drum band pa­rade through the streets 13.00: Bell ring­ing and rock­ets 20.30: Col­lec­tion of fi­esta queens for the pa­rade 21.00: Fi­esta pa­rade with bands, fi­esta troupes and floats. Start­ing from the Tor­re­vieja end of Avenida Fed­erico Gar­cía Lorca 24.00: Disco and danc­ing in the school play­ground

Sunday, July 22 09.00: Bell ring­ing and rock­ets 12.00: Saint’s Mass 13.00: Bell ring­ing and rock­ets 19.30: Walk through the streets of the town ac­com­pa­nied by Beni­jó­far mu­si­cal union band. Dur­ing the walk the fi­esta queens and fe­male par­tic­i­pants in the tape race will be col­lected 20.30: Tra­di­tional tape race in the school play­ground
