THE BENIJÓFAR patron saint, San Jaime fiestas get underway today (Friday, July 13) and continue until Thursday, July 26. The town may not be the largest in the Vega Baja but the residents know how to enjoy themselves when it comes to fiesta time. The town hall wishes everybody ‘happy fiestas’ Here is the programme of the main events:
Friday, July 13 20.30: Grand procession to collect the fiesta queens with the Benijófar musical union society band and grand fiesta association parade with Fénix Batukada (samba-flavoured street parade), leaving from the town hall 21.30: Official fiesta reception at the town hall 22.00: Election of fiesta queens including a performance by the María José dance group at San Jaime school playground 24.00: Fiesta opening night disco at San Jaime school playground. Dance until your body can take no more!
Saturday, July 14 10.00: Big heads and pipe and drum band parade through the streets 13.00: Fiesta inauguration with guest speaker, fiesta parade, foam cannon, beer, confetti and gifts at the entrance to the town hall 14.00: Start of the 16th multicultural gastronomy day. Tapas tasting of typical dishes from Benijófar and various other countries, as well as the popular Benijófar barbecue of locally produced sausages, etc. Everyone is encouraged to come along and participate. The event will take place at the sports ground. Tapas cost €0.50 17.00: Colour fiesta and disco – bring some music and colour into your life. At the sports centre 20.00: Cagá del Burro: Calle Francisco Rivera Pérez will be divided into numbered plots (which can be purchased for €3), if the burro (donkey) ‘loses it load’ in your plot you win €200, if it has a ‘sprinkle’ on your plot you win a ham. Plot tickets are available from some local businesses 23.30: Una Noche en Mexico (a night in Mexico) musical show followed by macro disco in the school playground
Sunday, July 15 10.00: Exhibition of classic cars and bikes, choppers, and vehicles being entered into the Wacky Races contest, which will arrive through the urbanisations and town streets. The exhibition will take place principally in Calle Corazón de Jesús and Avenida Federico García Lorca. There also will be music, a bar and gifts 20.00: 8th Wacky Races. Contestants steer their home-built, engineless cars down the town’s hills. Assemble at Calle Pilar Miró. The course follows Calle Pilar Miró, Calle Juan Ramón Jiménez, Calle Pablo Picasso and ends at the school playground 22.00: María José Ballet festival at the school playground
Monday, July 16 19.00: Benijófar music band parades through Monteazul and Atalaya Park urbanisations 19.00: Youth football sala contest 21.30: Summer cinema at San Jaime school playground with the film Señor Dame Paciencia (Lord, give me patience). Bring your evening meal and the fiesta association will provide drinks and popcorn. At San Jaime school playground Tuesday, July 17 10.00: Children’s water fiesta featuring the latest inflatables and water attractions at the municipal sports centre swimming pool 19.30: San Jaime fiesta petanca contest at Plaza de las Verbenas. Free registration - call Charly on 618 382 444 20.00: Children’s fancy dress parade, fantasy and imagination in the streets. Starting and ending at San Jaime school. At the end of the parade there will be snack and entertainment with La Isla del Tesoro (treasure island)
Wednesday, July 18 19.00: Inter fiesta associations mixed football sala contest at the sports centre. Free registration 21.00: Third age fiesta. Supper for the town’s pensioners with entertainment by the musical group Mediterráneo at San Jaime school playground
Thursday, July 19 21.00: Grand evening meal and prize bingo for the benefit of Santiago Apóstol church at San Jaime school playground. Those attending can bring their own food or purchase it at the event
Friday, July 20 13.00: Bell ringing and rockets 19.00: Children’s football sala contest. Free registration 21.00: Flamenco fiesta at the Osiris fiesta grounds, with the best Andalucian atmosphere, music and snacks 23.30: Remember Queen (Queen tribute), followed by macro disco until dawn Saturday, July 21 09.00: Bell ringing and rockets 10.00: Big heads and pipe and drum band parade through the streets 13.00: Bell ringing and rockets 20.30: Collection of fiesta queens for the parade 21.00: Fiesta parade with bands, fiesta troupes and floats. Starting from the Torrevieja end of Avenida Federico García Lorca 24.00: Disco and dancing in the school playground
Sunday, July 22 09.00: Bell ringing and rockets 12.00: Saint’s Mass 13.00: Bell ringing and rockets 19.30: Walk through the streets of the town accompanied by Benijófar musical union band. During the walk the fiesta queens and female participants in the tape race will be collected 20.30: Traditional tape race in the school playground

Tables can be reserved from 18.00 Following the supper the fiesta prize giving ceremony will take place 23.30: Show by the carnival group Los Machos Ibéricos – finalists in 2018 Cádiz carnival contest – followed by macro disco in the school playground
