THE PALMERA Imperial (imperial palm tree) in Elche is being nominated for the title for European Tree of the Year 2019.

This monumental palm with seven trunks grows in the Huerta del Cura (priest’s garden) is 180 years old.

It is the most unusual and best loved of all the trees in the city’s Palmeral plantations, which are the most extensive in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is mentioned in the official hymn of the municipality, in several popular songs and even in a poem by Miguel Hernández.

For the presentation of its candidacy on Wednesday, around 100 representatives of local social, cultural, business institutions and associations, and from city hall posed for this photo by the tree.
