Ortega’s riches rain on Orihuela
By Nuria Pérez A DIGITAL mammography machine and a CT scanner have been purchased for the Vega Baja hospital at Orihuela.
The funding has come from donations made by the foundation of Inditex owner Amancio Ortega, one of the world’s richest men.
A hospital spokesman pointed out that the new scanner provides a high resolution image of the whole body in just a few seconds and needs lower radiation levels than previous technology.
Moreover, it can be used on coronary arteries as well.
The new mammography machine provides a 3D-high resolution image.
This ‘improves and makes easier’ the diagnosis of breast-related illnesses and avoids in some cases the need for complementary tests such as biopsies.
The spokesman noted that the scan reaches breast areas which could not be viewed by traditional or older apparatus.
“It will play a key role in early detection of cancer,” he said.
A total of €29.4 million is being donated by the Fundación Amancio Ortega to buy equipment for hospitals in the Valencia region for cancer diagnosis, detection and treatment.
