Costa Blanca News (South Edition) - - What's On -

By Samantha Kett Roman winery on the Montgó and castle temple tour EXPLORE the local history and culture this weekend with a series of free trips out – learn how the Romans made wine, drink in the stunning greenery of the Montgó and tour what used to be Dénia's answer to the Holy See within the grounds of its majestic Mediaeval fortress.

Set off bright and early on Saturday, December 8 for a guided tour of the prehistoric walled Iberian settlement, the Benimàquia, on the west face of the Montgó and visit its ancient winery, built and in use in the 6th century BC. You'll meet on the CV-735 Dénia-Jávea road at kilometre 2, opposite the Alicante-Dénia rail platform at 10.30am, ready to start the walk up the Benimàquia track in front of the Occupational Centre in La Xara.

The ascent is easy enough for inexperienced and unfit walkers; just bring comfortable, sturdy footwear and a bottle of water.

During the Mediaeval era, the Santa María church inside the castle was the main point of worship and rule in Dénia, making it very much worth the detour – find out more about it, and about life in general within the castle walls in the Middle Ages, on Sunday morning. You'll meet at 10.30am at the castle reception, and be given full commentary throughout your visit.

Although the trips are free of charge, booking is essential as numbers are limited – pop into Dénia's local history museum between 10.30am and 19.00 (remember it is closed from 13.00 to 16.00 for lunch) or call them on 96 642 02 60 to put your name down. Benidorm turned their Christmas lights on last Saturday as a start to this year’s festive season at the Plaza de la Navidad (Christmas square at the Town hall grounds) where there will be bouncy castles for the young ones from 12.00 to 14.00 and a show of some kind at 18.30 until January 6th, storytellers, music show, theatre play, as well as the ice rink open all day long, from 9.00 till 21.00.

Apart from these, the Christmas fair continues at C/Gambo (pictured) where the street is completely transformed into a Christmas village with music, lights, decorations, rides for the youngest and of course… Santa’s House! Children can go in the house and see Santa himself, sit on his lap and take a picture with him! It is an amazing time for them.

The very well known Benidorm San Silvestre race will take place on Dec 30 for the 8th year, starting at 10.00 from the Avda Europa, on the beachfront. so start training ASAP if you want to join in this year and don't forget your Santa Hat or fancy dress!
