Black football managers

Costa Blanca News (South Edition) - - International Sport -

Sports comments By Tony Matthews Recently, when he was appointed by Macclesfield Town, the former Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and England defender Sol Campbell became only the fourth black manager currently engaged with a Premiership/Football League club.

The other three are Keith Curle at Northampton Town, Chris Hughton at Brighton and Darren Moore at West Bromwich Albion.

Over the last 25 years or so there have, in fact, been more than 20 black managers who have bossed clubs in the PL/FL system, and they include four former England internationals, namely Viv Anderson, who was one of the first with Barnsley (1993-94)... John Barnes with Tranmere Rovers (2009) and he also managed Celtic... Paul Ince with Blackburn Rovers and Notts County (between 2008 and 2011) and Carlton Palmer with Mansfield Town (two spells between 2002 and 2005) and Stockport County (2003-04).

Top Dutch star Ruud Gullit was Chelsea’s manager for two seasons: 1996-98 and thereafter was in charge of Newcastle United (1998-99) and JimmyFloyd Hasselbaink served as boss of Burton Albion (2014-15), Q.P.R. (2015-16) and Northampton (2017-18).

Other black managers include Keith Alexander of Lincoln City (2002-06) and Peterborough United (2006-07)... Ricky Hill of Luton Town (appointed in 2000)... Marcus Bigot (Coventry City)... Noel Blake (Exeter City)... Chris Kiwomya (Notts County)... Iffy Onoura (Swindon Town), ... Chris Powell (Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town)... Leroy Rosenior (Brentford)... Garry Thompson (Bristol Rovers)... and to a certain extent, even Sky pundit Chris Kamara was one-time manager of Bradford City (1995-98) and Stoke City (1998).

The aforementioned Hughton was also in charge at Newcastle United (2009-10), Birmingham City (2011-12) and Norwich City (2012-14) before taking charge at Brighton, while previously Curle had bossed Mansfield Town (2002-04), Notts County (2012-13) and Carlisle United (201418).

Some supporters will say that the manager/head coach of their club is from an Asian/African/West Indian background. Rightly so. And here’s a fact: of all the 92 ‘League’ club managers in office right now, 48 are English-born, eight come from Scotland, seven are Welsh and three Irish, with the other 26 coming from 14 different countries, including six Spaniards, three Italians, three Germans and three Portuguese.
