Dad arrested for battering wife
Brave six year old tells police how his father had beaten his mother
By Nuria Pérez and Dave Jones A MAN has been detained for beating his wife unconscious and locking her in a cupboard at their home while their sixyear-old son looked on.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in Murcia city. Several local police officers rushed to the apartment after neighbours rang the emergency services to report hearing screams and a heated argument.
According to state news agency EFE, the 29-year-old husband refused to allow the officers entry to the flat.
As a result a scuffle broke out as they moved to handcuff the man.
When they started to search the apartment the suspect told officers that his wife had gone out, but a neighbour insisted that she had not left the family home.
Then the young son explained to the police that his father had beaten his mother and she had passed out, so he had poured cold water over her head.
Finally the officers found the victim locked in a cupboard, with blankets over her.
According to EFE, she had several visible bruises and red marks on her body.
Officers believe that her husband had bundled her into the cupboard so they would not be able to find her.
They noted that she received medical attention but did not have to go to hospital.
She told the police that she had caused her own injuries but the statements from her son and the neighbours told a different story.
Officers arrested her husband for domestic violence and he was taken to the National Police station, where an investigation into the incident was launched.
