Spate of burglaries in Morella
A SERIES of burglaries were committed in Morella early Monday morning.
A total three sites were burglarised at around 02.00: the optician’s, a supermarket and a cigarette shop – which had already been burglarised back in September.
At the optician’s they stole all the materials they could get their hands on by simply breaking the front door open.
The shop owner said: ‘when I arrived, I saw the door open and as soon as I entered I knew what had happened. It's a disaster, they’ve stolen all the sunglasses, several pre- scription glasses, frames and both computers’.
At the cigarette shop it was a similar story, as the owner points out: ‘They stole all the tobacco in the warehouse and the computer. They took everything’.
She adds that the computer ‘was my personal one, so they haven’t only stolen work items, part of my life is there. It’s outrageous and frustrating.’
Fortunately, the supermarket stayed largely intact. The thieves opened two holes in a wall but were unable to get inside due to the presence of a ramp, so they decided to break down the front door instead. Upon doing so, the alarm went off and they ran away.
Even though criminality is low in the area, residents complain that a lack of police presence is leading to a larger number of burglaries. ‘There can’t be just four or five officers for the whole district. It doesn’t work’.
