FIREFIGHTERS in Gandía have netted the world reserve championship rank for their road-crash rescue skills at the global final in Cape Town, South Africa.

They travelled to the sub- tropical nation with the Valencia provincial brigade and competed along with 34 other teams from 14 countries.

Their scores were the highest ever achieved by a Spanish fire brigade in the competition's 19-year history.

Three elements to the competition tested their emergency rescue skills, and Gandia took first place in the technical team category thanks to the excellent performance by Sergio Gascó, Alberto Pallás, José Ignacio Prósper, Josep Monfort, first-aider Pedro Barranco and fire chief Vicente Sala.

Torrent (L'Horta Oest) fire brigade came third in the world, and Gandia came second.
