A PROJECT to set up a centre of excellence for windsurfing in Santa Pola has been announced by Olympic windsurfer Iván Pastor.

This centre for practitioners of the sport to train and perfect their technique will be opened at the Club Náutico, explained councillor for sports María Dolores Tomás.

Sr Pastor, who is a ninetime world champion and fourtime Olympic champion, indicated that he also could pass on the benefits of his knowledge and experience from a long career to other sailors in the Valencia region.

Furthermore, the hope is that this centre will be a key facility for the preparations for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Club Náutico president Pascual Orts said: “We all realise that a day will come when Iván will no longer be at the maximum level which is required from an elite sportsman and, knowing that this will come, we are now starting to create a new path so that Iván can keep giving everything to those young windsurfers who are starting their own paths.”

The centre will not only play host to training windsurfers from the Club Náutico or the sport’s federation, but also to many international competitors who know Sr Pastor and want to train with him. They will also be very aware of the ‘magnificent weather’ that Santa Pola enjoys, added the spokeswoman.

The council is hoping the centre will be a key facility for the Tokyo Olympics
