Preventorio car-crash blackspot wiped out
By Samantha Kett A MAJOR accident blackspot in Real de Gandia has finally been eliminated – 35 years after residents started campaigning.
The junction onto the main highway from the Monterrey urbanisation, a complex that includes the Preventorio children’s home, has been the site of numerous crashes as it is completely blind and drivers take their lives into their hands when pulling out.
Deaths are not unknown – in fact, the most recent was in late 2016. Drivers in the village have been calling for a sol- ution since 1983 and reassurances and promises by local and regional governments have always come to nothing.
At last, after three-and-ahalf decades of being fobbed off, funding was freed up to build a roundabout, which has just been unveiled.
Since the last local elections, all the cash Real de Gandia received from the regional public works ministry went into paying off the council’s debt – until a year ago, when it was at last able to set aside funds for the new traffic island.
