Cigarette consumption rises

Costa Levante News - - NEWS -

By Joe Wickman THE NUMBER of packets of cigarettes sold in 2018 in Castellón rose by 0.74%, even though the total still remains a far cry from figures registered in 2008.

An average 86,348 packets of tobacco were sold every day during the year 2018 in Castellón tobacco shops for a total 28.8 million from January to November, official figures released by the central government show. This is an increase compared to the 28.6 million sold in 2017, but just less than half the 56.2 million that people smoked a decade ago.

The regional Health Department says that polls show that only 19.5% of people over 14 consider themselves smokers, a percentage which reached 35.4 among residents 25 years ago. Therefore, a decrease in smokers, coupled with the overall population decrease, is said to be behind the long-term drop. In regards to this year’s increase, experts reveal that the population in Castellón province has grown by 0.2%, which could be the determining factor.

By genders, the 14-to-24 age bracket is the only group where women smoke more than men.
