With long-standing history, this hospital has been internationally certified. Frank País International Scientific Orthopedic Complex offers 17 specialized programs. This detail was explained to Excelencias by Dr. MSc. Roberto Gonzalez Martin, First-Degree Specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology.

The services provided by this Havanabased Medical Care Complex are focused on treating matters related to upper and lower limbs, spine, hips, tumors and infections in the Musculoskeletal System (SOMA is the Spanish acronym), sports trauma, pediatric orthopedics, traumatology, arthroscopy and minimum access surgery, microsurgery, external fixation, regenerative medicine and rehabilitation. Moreover, it offers leading and development programs, most of which can be only carried out at Frank País Hospital.

“We have the only tissue bank in Cuba, which was also the first one in Latin America. Skin and lyophilized bone are produced there. We are reactivating this program and the production pace is presently good. This program is a great solution to such problems as complex accidents and burns, and it is a soughafter service at both national and international levels. Bone grafts are made of joints and long and soft bones. They are very useful when it comes to treating tumors in adults and children and complex fractures, where bone or skin parts are missing,” the Second-Degree Specialist in Health Management underlines.

The treatment of high performance athletes, dancers and circus artists is another leading program. “Called Ortofoxa, treats very particular injuries. Here athletes like Ivan Pedroso, Javier Sotomayor and Alberto Juantorena have been treated, all glories of Cuban sport, who after having finished the treatment continued to win Olympic medals and world championships.

“We have an ultrasound and soft tissue shock wave program. The latter, known as lithotripsy, is applied to destroy stones and calcifications in kidneys and other organs,” Gonzalez Martin explains.

Frank País has a high level of diagnosis and treatment arthroscopy, with the knee being the most important of those that are currently performed. However, it is also performed successfully on hip, ankles, elbows, shoulders and wrists.

“We have developed regenerative medicine, mainly the use of plasma rich in platelets and stem cells, with which we treat many patients with osteoarthritis in multiple joints, muscle injuries, tendinous, among others”, said the director of Frank País.

With 615 beds to provide hospitalized medical care, this is the hospital in Cuba outfitted to replace prosthesis. Prosthesis for knees, hips, elbow, shoulder and wrists are made in its workshops. “All these elements complement the orthopedic treatment of children and adults, ranging from scoliosis to all spine lesions.”

Among the most qualified centers in terms of SOMA physical therapy and rehabilitation, Frank País Hospital fosters the training and bettering of its specialists by means of courses, diploma courses, performance master's degrees and doctorates. That is why it is proud of its professional team, which stands out for its high specialization and ethical commitment. Based on this premise, they carry out successful development programs.

Hundreds of patients from Cuba and the rest of the world come to this place. Its facilities include a 200 lodging capacity apartment hotel, for companions or attendees of events hosted or organized by this center, always with the goal of providing the best healthcare service, Dr. Gonzalez Martin finished.
