From Sex & the City to Just like that

-

Certain things never change, for the better or the worse. Carrie Bradshaw frequently uses this expression. You got it, Sex and the City or its sequel, And Just Like That.

It was ground-breaking in many ways, some good, and others cheesy. Nonetheless, Sex and the City proved to be a notable success, boasting a six-season run and a total of 94 episodes.

The revival or continuation is, And just like that ranked No. 7 on Netflix’s Top 10 upon its release on the streamer recently. It will be intriguing to observe how younger generations interact with the new version of the show, twenty-six years after the release of Sex and the City. It is probable that there will be significant interest in examining how the show’s themes on dating, love, and friendship hold up in the contemporary world. When this show came out in 1998, we couldn’t stop watching it.

Females behaving like women from our time, which includes having casual sex after just meeting someone once, or drinking too much booze, or being open about your sexuality. It was an avant-garde drama in a manner that was unheard of at the time, regardless of one’s preference. The title of this show was also daring, and colourful and created a stir.

Thinking out loud

The show was inspired by Candace Bushell’s novel. Four friends living in Manhattan struggling with their career’s, life, and searching for Mr Right, which actually sounds very cliché, but in honesty we are all a little of each one of these women, if we are honest, and mostly we are not... Of the four career women, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), a writer and self-described sexual anthropologist, philosophises about modern sex life in a newspaper column based on her experiences and those of her friends. She is and sometimes isn’t with her man, Mr Big, the name sounds pathetic, by the way! She is, indeed, addicted to Blahnik’s as like myself. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is the naive, idealistic princess caught up in some fairy-tale world that only exists in Disney, thankfully as the series developed, so did she.

The cynical, headstrong busy lawyer Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) has no time for small talk and is on a mission that she, herself doesn’t seem to understand. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is the older, more mature woman, evidently with the youngest, most gorgeous, and sexiest boyfriend. That Samantha, was spot on. Samantha is also self-sufficient and always prepared for sexual pleasure, making her possibly the most intriguing and captivating character in this series.

They were sassy women with some outrageously put together looks, which were interesting, even though not always flattering. There girly talk, wrapped up in their to-die-for or die-in garments, and those iconic places that their lives, and loves, or disappointments took place around and about Manhattan. Funnily enough, and just like that… those moments caught on film are now temples of pilgrimage to many devoted fans. One can even hop on a tour to visit Carrie Bradshaw’s flat, grab a croissant at Magnolia Bakery, or a mocha café in front of the New York Public Library, and afterwards grab pizza at Two boots Pizza Shop. Maybe sip a Cosmopolitan or Cosmos cocktail at the Plaza Hotel. Personally, I would go directly to Manolo Blahnik’s, as I said, I have a crazy little love for his shoes, then of course, straight to the plaza. I often had a drink at the Champagne Bar, at the Plaza when I lived in Manhattan.

A few facts

The films that were based on Sex and the City, never really made it, changing from series to film is hard to pull-off, both films were a flop. Sex and the City was sometimes funny, humane and light entertainment, glazed with narcissistic, and superficial feminism embellished with a bow dipped in racism. Let’s face it, to have an orgasm over a Louis Vuitton handbag or Jessica Parker’s own brand of ultra-thin stilettos is not really that normal. And now they’re back in their new series these galpals without the most popular character, Samantha, and a more mixed cast, with people from all walks of life as they announced, haha, haha!

Samantha never reached an agreement with the producers, and she actually thought that she was done and had no good reason to continue in the show.

Truthfully there are other off-therecord versions of why Kim Cattrall stopped being Samantha, one being her bad relationship with Parker, another over money. Regardless of the story, the fact that we are all growing older and in another moment of our lives which is also beautiful.

They bang on a bit too much about being old hat, which is annoying because you look great, you feel great, and age is just a number. Please focus on the celebration of life, my friends.

Sorry, hang on, the other day

Samantha said that she was back for a fling with her girly friends. Let’s get ready!

A few things I learned from Sex and the City, that bad photography ruins a film, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and they solve marital problems. Gays can get married in some states in the

USA, cheat in the ones they cannot get married in. Thrift shops are the best way to enhance your look. And you can never have too many Manolo’s… I relish witnessing their embrace with humour, life’s slings and arrows.

And just like that, life continues…
