The Con-Man Mr Ripley

-

There are larger than life figures such as Mr Ripley in the world of literature and cinema. The talented Mr. Ripley is a fictional character written by American writer Patricia Highsmith in her novel. The book was published in 1955 and was the first of several featuring an almost likeable murderer with a hint of the boy next door image. Highsmith wrote Ripley Underground, Ripley's game, and The boy who followed Ripley. These are merely a few of her numerous accomplishments. Patricia eventually settled in Europe. She published Strangers on a Train in 1950, an interesting story about two men, one notably evil and the other notably good. One year later, the literary work was adapted into a film by Alfred Hitchcock.

These eight-episode series, starring the magnificent actor Andrew Scott as the iconic Tom Ripley, are a work of art and a meticulously built piece of filmmaking. It is a chilled neo-noir film with beautiful shots that are comparable to some of Hitchcock’s work. The film also has a touch of the great Italian films and, in black & white, enhances scenes such as at the beginning of the film, when Tom is moving a body down a flight of stairs. It would be overwhelming in colour due to the presence of blood, however, in black and white, it depicts the thumping of the body, with a cat gazing in as a silent witness to a sinister act.

Over the years, many great actors have played The Talented Mr Ripley, such as Alain Delon, Matt Damon, Jude Law, John Malkovich, Dennis Hopper and Barry Pepper.

While the details of the specific adaptation may vary, one thing is certain: the essence of Mr. Ripley will remain intact. The charming and cunning antagonist is capable of both kind gestures and chilling manipulation. He is a timeless figure due to his ability to navigate the complexities of human nature while maintaining an air of mystery.

As fans eagerly anticipate the release of this new adaptation, it is evident that Mr. Ripley’s appeal remains as potent as ever. Whether you are a longtime fan of the character or a newcomer to his world, the promise of a fresh take on this classic figure is cause for excitement and anticipation. Therefore, be prepared to be charmed, intrigued, and perhaps a little uneasy by the new Mr. Ripley, who has once again taken center stage in our collective imagination.

The Series & Scott

Listening to Andrew Scott talk about playing this dark, complex character, which is an absolute urban psychopath or sociopath, making it difficult to detect. His friendliness and politeness are qualities that throw most suspicions of malice off to most of us simple folk. His friendliness and politeness are qualities that throw most suspicions of malice off to most of us. But aren’t they just red flags for folks who’re a bit smarter? The aesthetic of the Ripley films is distinctly Italian-influenced and ultra-chic, resembling that of a vintage Vogue.

I adore Scott actor who recently portrayed the highly acclaimed Queer film All of us Strangers, which had the potential to garner several Oscar nominations, but unfortunately, was unable to do so. Is there a stench of homophobic issues still in Hollywood despite all the campaigning? Yes, there is. There are a few elderly individuals who are resistant to comprehending the significance of diversity, however, the Oscar winners serve as living proof of this concept. The miniseries Ripley will grip you and send a chill down your spine. I have fallen back in love with Ripley once again. Knowing he is his worst enemy, and it cannot ever work, not our love, I mean him covering up so many lies only leads to one place, getting found out!

Cast & Crew

Andrew Scott, has been around for a while, but recently, he seems to be everywhere all at once… He brings a vulnerability and quietness that can unleash a roaring strength and passion at any given moment, whether it’s Fleabag, Sherlock, Spectre, Scape Goat or on stage, Hamlet, King Lear. His dashing looks and the fresh-faced boy next door look add to his sexy charm.

Steven Zaillian is the director and writer of Shinndler's List, Awakenings, Gangs of New York, and Moneyball,

and the recent film, The Irishmen, and the unforgettable, All Kings Men.

This director is an authority on actors who have slightly faded, but who are not forgotten. He said, “When I do casting, I don’t look at their past, I look to see if they can act.” He helped Rourke get back on his feet, and Downey too, knowing their kind of talent only gets better with age.

Actress Dakota Fanning plays Marge Sherwood, and Johnny Flynn played Dickie Greenleaf. MusicJeff Russo is also known for his work in films such as Fargo, Legion, Counterpart, and Star Trek.

Mr Ripley, by Zaillian with Scott, is a masterpiece of art.
