Acaba de cumplir 115 años, pero a la Livraria Lello le quedan aún muchos capítulos por escribir. Cuando tuvo que cerrar sus puertas por la pandemia, se convirtió en la primera librería “drive-thru” del mundo, sirviendo a sus clientes sin que tuvieran que bajarse del coche. Ha sido también pionera en organizar subastas de libros y posicionar las obras literarias como objetos de culto. Desde que reabrió sus puertas, solo ha reforzado su influencia en la ciudad: colabora con instituciones como la Fundación José Saramago, la compañía Pantone o la revista Time, y ha adquirido el Teatro Sá da Bandeira (el más antiguo de Oporto) y el edificio contiguo a la tienda, que está rehabilitando para que funcione como espacio de cultura.

It’s just turned 115, but the Livraria Lello bookshop still has many chapters to write. Just a year after holding its first book auction (it sees literary works as cult items), it had to shutter its doors due to the pandemic, so it became the world’s first drive-through bookshop, serving its customers from the comfort of their cars. Its influence in the city has only grown since it reopened. It’s been working with institutions such as the José Saramago Foundation, Pantone and Time magazine, and has acquired the Sá da Bandeira Theatre (the oldest in Porto) and the building adjacent to the shop, which is being refurbished as a cultural space.
