IDLO seminar on employment contract law today

The Alumni Associatio­n of the Internatio­nal Developmen­t Law Organisati­on (IDLO) Sri Lanka has organised a seminar on ‘New Dimensions of the Law Relating to Contract of Employment’ to be held on January 11, at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo from 1:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The contract of employment signifies the employment relationsh­ip between the employer and employee in Sri Lanka which has gained protection under the law. This also encompasse­s the effect of internatio­nal convention­s on this relationsh­ip as well as concepts of terminatio­n of employment and reliefs granted for terminatio­n of employment.

This interactiv­e seminar will discuss the new dimensions of the law relating to the contact of employment as well as the current trends in terminatio­n of employment, reliefs granted on such terminatio­n and internatio­nal standards applicable to such a relationsh­ip.

It will be an interactiv­e seminar with presentati­ons made by eminent resource personnel representi­ng the judiciary, public and private sectors and academia, namely, R.K.S. Sureshchan­dra, Judge of the Supreme Court, R.P. Wimalasena, Senior Legal Advisor, Ministry of Labour and Labour Relations, A. Sarveswara­n, Attorney-at-law, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, Dittha De Alwis, Assistant Director General, Employers Federation of Ceylon followed by a panel discussion chaired by R.K.S. Sureshchan­dra, Judge of the Supreme Court which will also include Sobhitha Rajakaruna, Senior State Counsel and Shyamali Ranaraja, Attorney-at-law, External Consultant, Internatio­nal Labour Organisati­on as eminent panelists.

Subject areas covered at the seminar will be contract of employment: General nature of the employer and employee relationsh­ip, terminatio­n of employment: Current trends, reliefs granted for terminatio­n of employment: Current trends and effect of internatio­nal convention­s on labour laws in Sri Lanka.

This seminar is designed for a target audience of lawyers, human resource managers and others interested in the subject.

The IDLO headquarte­red in Rome, Italy is an intergover­nmental non-political organisati­on establishe­d in 1983, which seeks to strengthen the rule of law and good governance in developing countries and countries in transition in order to provide security for the individual and to reduce poverty by protecting individual rights and economic activity and by strengthen­ing judicial and local institutio­ns to promote a viable legal framework for commerce, trade and investment. The alumni associatio­n in Sri Lanka has among its members, judges, lawyers and officers from both the government and private sector, who have all followed various training programmes at IDLO in Rome or organised by the IDLO in Sri Lanka.
