REMEMBERING THATHTHA WITH LOVE ON HIS 50TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY

-

Fifty years have passed silently but memories of our precious Thaththa, remains alive in our hearts.

He was a devoted husband and a loving and caring father! Most of all he was a down to earth person with a superb sense of humour who made a difference and lived a life with a great sense of trust. His death was a sudden one, occurred within 4-5 days he was admitted to Colombo General Hospital complaining of a chest pain.

He was called to rest with Jesus on 15th January 1962 at the age of 54 years leaving behind his mental power and his unique quality of humour which brought seven of us together…..amma, Nihal, Neelanjanie, Ramani, Hemasiri, Senaka and Priyantha. He was always remained in our spirits during our good and bad times. His demise occurred exactly one year after he was transferred to Colombo General Post Office and with the admission of his eldest son Nihal to the Bio-science Faculty of University of Colombo.

A distinguish old boy of St. Aloysius’ College – Galle who excelled in studies and sports under the guidance of Jesuit Priests, the Founder’s of the College who came from Belgium, France and Italy. He passed his Matriculation Examination and joined Ceylon Postal Service as a Clerk and rose up to the level of Class One Post Master until his demise. I can still remember the childhood days we spent with him in Galle where he devoted his time to take us to college on his way to office. During week-ends he never missed to take us for evening walks to places like Dutch Fort (Ramparts), Butterfly Bridge and to Botanical Gardens (Park) situated within the walking distance from our home and every Sunday the very first thing he did was to take us for Holy Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral situated next to the College. He never missed to take us for Postal Service parties especially for annual X’mas party where he used to enjoy and sing with the entire staff without any difference. To be honest those days coming to Colombo was just like going abroad now-a-days and I still remember how he waited till we get our school vacations to give us a train ride in ‘RUHUNU KUMARI’ which we thoroughly enjoyed and visited our relatives in Colombo and got back home in the evening train. All in all our Thaththa was a very jovial person who took his life very lightly and had the courage to face any difficulties or short comings without showing to the outside world. He was a happy go lucky person.

He always wanted us to be honest and outspoken like him and to help the needy when-

He always wanted us to be honest and outspoken like him and to help the needy whenever possible. He used to say that he learnt to be honest and an outspoken person from his parents and later from his Alma Mater and wanted us to follow suit. He used to talk about the honest leaders Ceylon had during his time and had a great respect for Dr W. Dahanayake who had taught him in college

May the good Lord grant you eternal rest. We had a service of thanks giving in memory of you on January 15th and distributed lunch packets among deserving people and donated dry ration to a deserving family. At the same time we invoked merit to your beloved Wife, our precious Amma whom we lost in 2006. We miss both of you so much!!!
