- BY SUPUN DIAS AND M.K NANDASENA

An LTTE suicide jacket said to be several years old was found hidden inside a room of a guest house in Kataragama yesterday morning, police said.

The detection was made by the police after the three-kilo suicide jacket was found by a man who came to carry out repairs at the rest house.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said it believed the suicide jacket belonged to the LTTE and during the conflict the person carrying it might have hidden it in the store room following a failed mission.

It was found hidden inside a used tyre in the store room.

Police have recorded statements from the manager and several employees of the rest house following the detection.

The army bomb disposal unit was also called in after the discovery of the suicide kit bearing the serial number ‘S.R.P 014B’ and two detonators.

Police carried out a thorough search on the guest house and its occupants following the detection.

The guest house comprising 65 small rooms is situated opposite Kataragama President’s College in close proximity to the ‘Menik Sisila’ holiday resort used by police officers.

SP Rohana said the Government Analyst was to visit the scene and hand over the report within the next few days. Following the inspection the suicide jacket would be defused with the assistance of the Army.

Further investigations are being carried out under the directions of Hambantota DIG Nandana Wijeratne.
