Govt. shouldn’t waste time in finding solution: UNP

- BY YOHAN PERERA

The main opposition UNP yesterday urged the government not to waste time on finding a home- grown solution to the national issue but to implement recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and also the 13th Amendment to the fullest.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake who was responding to the assurance given by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday that the gover nment would go for a homeg rown solution to the national issue through the Parliamentary select committee, said this was nothing but an attempt to mark time.

He said the gover nment was upto its usual tricks by giving assurances to the inter national community and changing the tune locally. Mr. Attanayake was referring to a statement made by Indian Exter nal Af fairs Minister S. M. Krishna during his visit to Sri Lanka that the Sri Lankan gover nment had assured its willingness to go beyond the 13th Amendment in devolving power to provinces.

Mr. Attanayake said the gover nment should implement the recommendations made by the LLRC re port. He specifically mentioned the setting up of independent commis- sions including the police commission as recommended by the LLRC.

Besides he said the gover nment should implement the 13th Amendment to the fullest as it was something which the gover nment could implement without anyone’s help.

Government should implement the recommendations made by the LLRC report.
